The first laser eye vision procedure was done in 1988. The process has evolved over the last 25+ years to be very common and popular. So far more than 30 million patients, and counting, have had laser eye vision procedures done.
AM I SUITABLE?
More than 90 percent of those who suffer vision problems are suitable. Some medical conditions that exclude patients include: pregnancy, rheumatoid arthritis, or some cases of diabetes. We’ll advise you during your consultation.
CAN YOU GUARANTEE ME 20/20 VISION?
Every person’s eyes are unique. In most cases though, we can provide a noticeable correction and improvement. There are many factors to consider, but it is not uncommon to see vision actually corrected to be ‘better’ than 20/20.
WHAT IS THE RISK OF LOSING MY VISION?
Procedures are done one eye at a time. However, as an example of how safe the process is, statistics have shown that daily contact lens wearers have a one-in-2000 chance of vision being affected through infection. LASIK has shown to be closer to a one-in-10,000 chance of vision being affect. This translates to patients being five times less likely to have this issue due to a procedure than with wearing contact lenses.
WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MONOVISION AND LASIK PLUS?
The Laser Eye Centre is the only centre doing LASIK PLUS in the central North Island. Monovision is conventional vision correction that matches the eyes. LASIK PLUS on the other hand offers a subtle difference between dominant and non-dominant eyes. This offers a greater scope between near and far vision, as the brain is able to adjust and expand the range of focus.
HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE?
A typical customer is aged between 20-80 years old, with an average of just over 50. We have many patients that are both younger and older though. Our advice is to let your natural vision ‘stabilise’ for 12 months before a correction.
I HAVE HAD CATARACT SURGERY, CAN I GET VISION CORRECTION?
Following cataract surgery, we can also perform vision correction at any age.
HOW LONG DOES THE IT TAKE, INCLUDING RECOVERY?
The LASIK procedure itself only takes 10-15 minutes for both eyes. This means you will be up and walking immediately after, albeit medicated. Most patients can drive within 24 hours, or ‘the next day’, depending on any temporary side-effects.
WHAT ABOUT PLAYING SPORTS?
You should avoid swimming for 2-3 weeks after the procedure, but most exercise can be resumed within one week. You should take specific care with high UV sports such as water or snow sports. Effective sunglasses are highly recommended during this time in particular.
HOW LONG DOES LASER EYE SURGERY LAST?
Eyes are for life, and so is vision correction. However, eyes naturally age and can change over time – even Laser Vision Correction cannot stop ageing. The ageing mostly affects near vision becoming increasingly blurry. We have and array of individualised treatments to preserve youthful vision.

“It was life-changing, pain-free and easy. I was worried for no good reason, as the procedure took minutes; I sat up and the world was clear again. The next day, signs were clearer, lights were sharper and I had a whole new world of detail that I didn’t even have with contacts. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.”
