Post-Cataract Laser Enhancement

Cataract surgery does a wonderful job of removing the cloudy lens and restoring bright, clear vision. But it doesn't always remove the need for glasses completely.

Still Reaching for Your Glasses After Cataract Surgery?

You had cataract surgery, so why are you still wearing glasses? If you've had standard cataract

surgery and find you still need glasses for reading, driving, or everyday tasks, you're not alone, and

you're not stuck with it. A simple laser enhancement could reduce your dependence on glasses even

further.

Why This Happens

It's more common than you'd think.

Cataract surgery does a wonderful job of removing the cloudy lens and restoring bright, clear vision.

But it doesn't always remove the need for glasses completely.

That's simply down to how eyes heal. Standard (monofocal) lenses used in cataract surgery are

usually set for one distance, often driving and TV, which means reading glasses are still needed for

close-up tasks. And every eye heals slightly differently, so even with excellent surgery, a small

amount of blur, astigmatism, or imbalance between your eyes can remain.

Common reasons you may still need glasses:

• Your lens was set for a single distance (usually far)

• A touch of astigmatism wasn't fully corrected

• One eye focuses slightly differently to the other

• You'd simply like sharper, more comfortable vision for reading, screens, or night driving

None of this means anything went wrong with your surgery. It just means your eyes may be a

great candidate for a little extra fine-tuning with a laser enhancement.

What Is a Laser Enhancement?

A laser enhancement is a well-established procedure that fine-tunes your vision after standard

cataract surgery. It works on the cornea which is the clear front window of your eye to correct the

small amount of remaining refractive error that your artificial lens couldn't fix on its own.

Cataract surgery replaces your natural lens with an new artificial lens, but every eye heals

differently. Occasionally, the new lens settles slightly differently than planned, or the cornea has

small imperfections in its shape that the lens can't account for. Laser enhancement is a way to

address these small issues and help sharpen and balance your sight.

Typical issues a laser enhancement can address:

• Minor short-sightedness (myopia) or long-sightedness (hyperopia)

• Astigmatism not fully corrected by the original lens

• Blurred distance, near, or intermediate vision

• A slight imbalance between your two eyes
