Photorefractive Keratectomy

(PRK) Offers effective vision correction for patients who may not be suitable for LASIK, particularly those with thin or irregular corneas. PRK works by reshaping the surface of the cornea.

How PRK Works

PRK corrects your vision by using an Excimer laser to reshape the front surface of your cornea. This improves how light is focused onto the retina, allowing for clearer, sharper vision.

Step-by-step:

  1. A precisely programmed ZEISS laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue based on your exact prescription.
  2. A soft contact lens is placed on the eye to act as a bandage while the epithelium naturally regenerates.
  3. Full healing of the surface typically occurs within 5 to 7 days.

Is PRK Right for You?

PRK is an ideal option for patients who:

  • Have thin corneas or corneal surface irregularities
  • Are involved in contact sports or activities with a higher risk of eye trauma

Your suitability will be determined during a comprehensive consultation with our Laser Optometrist and Ophthalmic Surgeon.

What to Expect

Before Surgery

  • Avoid wearing contact lenses for several days to weeks beforehand.
  • On the day of treatment, arrive without makeup, perfume, or lotions.
  • Bring someone with you to drive you home after the procedure.

During the Procedure

  • A quick, painless process performed under numbing eye drops.
  • You’ll be in the clinic for up to 2 hours, including preparation and recovery time.

After Surgery

  • Rest at home immediately after treatment.
  • A protective bandage contact lens will remain on your eye for a few days.
  • Use prescribed eye drops to aid healing and prevent infection.
  • Attend scheduled follow-up visits to monitor your progress.
