Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) Eye Surgery

A Gentle Approach to Corneal Healing

If you’ve been living with ongoing discomfort or blurred vision caused by a corneal surface condition, Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) may offer the relief you've been looking for.

Unlike laser eye surgery that corrects vision (like LASIK or PRK), PTK is a specialised laser treatment designed to remove damaged or irregular tissue from the surface of the eye, helping to restore clarity and comfort.

What Does PTK Treat?

PTK is used to treat surface level issues of the cornea, the clear, front layer of your eye. It’s particularly helpful for:

  • Recurrent corneal erosion (a painful condition where the surface of the eye doesn't heal properly)
  • Corneal scars or haze
  • Corneal dystrophies (inherited conditions that cause cloudiness or irregularities)
  • Superficial opacities
  • Irregular or thinning corneal tissue

By carefully removing the damaged surface tissue, PTK allows healthy cells to grow back smoothly, often improving both comfort and clarity of vision.

What to Expect from the Procedure

PTK is a quick, outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day, no hospital stay needed.

Before Treatment:

  • You'll have a full eye assessment, including detailed scans to map the area that needs treatment.
  • Anaesthetic drops will be applied so the procedure is completely pain free.

During Treatment:

  • The laser is incredibly fast, it usually takes just seconds per eye, with the whole process taking around 10–15 minutes.
  • Once complete, a soft contact lens is placed on your eye to act as a protective bandage while it heals.

After Treatment:

  • You may feel mild discomfort or light sensitivity for the first day or two.
  • We'll provide pain relief and anti-inflammatory eye drops to support your healing.
  • You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

Healing and Recovery

  • The bandage lens will stay in place for a few days.
  • You’ll use prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops to help prevent infection and reduce inflammation.
  • It’s important to avoid eye rubbing, makeup, or any high impact activities (like sports) while your eye heals.
  • You may start noticing improvement in your vision within two weeks, but full recovery and visual clarity can take a few months.

Are There Any Risks?

Like any procedure, there are some risks, but serious complications are rare. Your surgeon will talk through everything with you and make sure you feel confident and informed before going ahead.

Common Questions About PTK

What technology do you use?
We use the ZEISS Visumax and MEL90 excimer lasers, known worldwide for their precision and excellent outcomes.

Will I feel anything during the laser?
No. Anaesthetic drops numb your eye, and a small eyelid holder gently prevents blinking, you’ll be comfortable throughout.

Do I need time off work?
Most people take around one week off to allow their eye to heal. If your job involves dust, wind, or debris, a longer break may be recommended.

How is PTK different from PRK?

  • PTK treats corneal diseases (like scars or erosion).
  • PRK corrects vision problems (like near or farsightedness).

Our team will explain which option is right for your needs.
